Loras College Yearbook Staff Member
In college, as a means in which to pay for all the dumb stuff college kids buy, I got a job working on Loras College's "Purgold" yearbook staff. As a staff member, I participated in many aspects of the yearbook making process.
In addition to learning InDesign and how book publishing works, I discovered how to work as a part of a team to brainstorm ideas, and how to plug away on my own time to get projects done before a deadline.
Below are photos of the 2008 (Legacy) and 2009 (Unity) yearbooks that I helped create.
- Visited the Walsworth Pubishing Company headquarters to learn the book making process
- Met with Walsworth Publishing representatives to discuss and select the physical details of the book
- Created the over all theme and design concepts for the yearbook
- Decided how to organize the pages
- Collected data from organization leaders
- Used InDesign to create the layouts for each page
- Wrote content for the organization pages
- Promoted the popularity of the yearbook on campus
- Helped organize the student body photo shoots

Loras Players' Head Costumer
After I got more involved with theatre department at College, I was hired as head of costumes for the Loras Players. The thespians nicknamed me" The Costume Mistress". It was a fascinating job because I was given two months or less to design anywhere between 10-30 costumes before the first dress rehearsal. The directors would give me a general vision of what they were looking for in the costumes and then from there, I was given the freedom to pretty much do whatever I wanted creatively. I had many tasks in this position:
Below are some of the costumes I put together for the Loras Players.
- Meet with directors' to discuss visions for the costumes
- Take measurements of all the actors involved in the play
- Create sketches of costume ideas
- Go through the costume rooms and select pieces we already had that would work
- Buy items needed that we did not already have
- Buy a new sewing machine when the old one breaks mid-production
- Create the costumes
- Designate tasks to costumer volunteers
- Be present during every production to fix unplanned rips and help with quick changes
- Maintain and organize the items in the seven costume rooms
- Loan out costumes to campus organizations and keep track of the pieces
